The Meissen chocolate cup standing in a galleried saucer, handles to both sides and lid to cup, painted romantic scene to front on cobalt blue ground, polychrome flowers to back. Scrolled gold decor to body of cup and saucer. The French word ‘trembleuse’ - trembling- was used to describe the slight shaking of the hand when maids carried precious hot chocolate in cups and walking long distances in large country houses.
To keep the hot chocolate from spilling, porcelain manufacturers created a little gallery on the saucer to avoid spillage. Chocolate was a very expensive commodity and Meissen porcelain hot chocolate cups and saucers with lid are a real collector item. Meissen blue cross to bases.
